Pioneer DJ just released an update to its Rekordbox music management software. Version 4.2.1 adds the ability to record external sound sources such as CD players and turntables, and have the tracks sent straight to your Rekordbox library. The software detects the silences between songs in an album, and creates a file for each track – that means you can “set and forget” the whole album ripping process (you still need to flip a record, of course).

It looks like Pioneer DJ wants Rekordbox to be the “iTunes for DJs” with this new ripping feature, and it makes sense: if you’ve got a lot of vinyl, CDs, and even cassettes that you’d want to digitise for use on CDJs or Rekordbox DJ, doing it within Rekordbox means you can do your importing (ripping), managing (cues, playlists), and exporting / performing in one place. Just hook up your turntable, CD player, or tape deck to your laptop, and get ripping.

Also added to Rekordbox 4.2.1 is the new RMX Effects Plus Pack for Rekordbox DJ, which brings custom FX from the RMX effects units to the laptop DJ app.

• Rekordbox 4.2.1 is now available as a free download. Check the Rekordbox website for more details.
